In the past fifty years the plastics industry has made giant steps forward; in fact it has become even more important than the steel industry. After 1945 polystyrene, polyethylene, P.V.C., polyamide, polymethyl methacrylate entered everyone’s home, independently of social class, in the remotest villages or in cities, in industrialized and agricultural countries. Thus began a phenomenon never witnessed in human history, an enormous and fast replacement of all the traditional materials with plastics, and complete rethinking of structures, the ergonomics of equipment, furniture and domestic articles. The same basin, same shape, same color, same material, could be found in Manila, Boston, Moscow, Paris or Lagos. We will now go through the phases of this fascinating history that has changed the face of the world in which we live.(to be continued..)
